Its a tapering cylindrical shape, narrower at the base with wider shoulders and a neck with a thick rim at the top. The shoulders are decorated with a typical Satsuma palette of orange and gilt with raised white decoration including 4 flower heads. The body is more unusual, brown at the base fading into a deep sky blue with beautifully painted lily flowers. One flower’s petals are tinged with pink and the main flower is raised with a pale green centre and blue highlights. The flower head beside it is all gilt and the leaves are brown and green with gilt veins. There is a signature to the base (sorry if I’ve shown this up-side-down). Overall condition is good. There is a small discreet foot chip which is mainly on the underneath. Where the base colour is visible, the edges of the shoulders, the base and the rim, there is a lot of glaze crazing as in all Satsuma ware but this isn’t evident on the blue body which has more of a matt finish. Approx 18 1/2″ (47cm) x 6″ diam across the shoulders. Weight 2.45 kg.
