An antique Meiji period small or miniature Japanese satsuma pottery vase that has been finely hand painted with white and striped peony flowers and a gilded butterfly. The striped flowers are either pink, red, blue or purple or gold. The base is marked with a gilded mark, including the Shimazu family crest or Mon. The vase is covered with a deep blue cobalt glaze and decorated with gilded and enamelled bush with peony flowers and a small butterfly. The Shimazu clan were the daimyo over the Satsuma domain (Kagoshima) and surrounding area. This is a great example of good quality antique Japanese export Satsuma-yaki??? Or Satsuma ware from the late 19th century dating from around 1900 during the Meiji period. The vase is 3 3/4 inches (9.4 cm) high and 2 5 /16 inches (6 cm) in diameter, it weighs 85 grammes unpacked. It is in good antique condition with some rubbing to the gilding and some minor losses to the enamel no chips cracks nor restoration. Please see the images.
